How to apply Adapta dark theme on Ubuntu Unity

Adapta is my favourite GTK theme to date. I especially like the dark version. I was using it on Antergos GNOME 3.20 and it was simply beautiful. Since Ubuntu 16.04 was released just a couple of days ago I decided to give it another try. One of the first things I wanted to do is to apply the dark version of Adapta GTK theme. It wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be.

On GNOME I could easily set the “global dark theme” option in GNOME Tweak Tool and that was it, Adapta was shown in dark, however there’s no such option in Unity (not even in Unity Tweak Tool) which was surprising to me. I didn’t want to install GNOME Tweak Tool on Ubuntu because of the unneeded dependencies so I chose another solution.

After installing Adapta, to apply the global dark theme in Unity you have to add the following lines to ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini.

[Settings]
gtk-application-prefer-dark-theme=1

Done. You have to close and re-open an app to take effect. Enjoy! 🙂
