Linux Mint is one of my favourite Linux distributions. I like that they really care about their community and implement features what their users want. I really think that Mint could really benefit of having a much more appealing design by default. I don’t like that the same wallpaper, theme, icons are the default ones for ages now, they seem a bit boring to me.
Mint is based on Ubuntu LTS releases. The next Ubuntu LTS is going to be released later this month and the following Linux Mint release will be based on that. It jumps from version 17.x to version 18 with a codename of Sarah. I was happy to read earlier that Clem – leader of Linux Mint – said that the new release will also feature a new theme and new icons.
Mint-y GTK and icon theme
Not long ago I noticed that a new icon theme and a new GTK theme has been uploaded to Mint’s GitHub repository. Both are called Mint-y (the current theme is called Mint-X). Mint-y GTK theme is based on the popular Arc GTK theme and Mint-y icon theme is based upon Moka. I’m personally very happy about this decision because Arc and Moka are my favourite GTK and icon themes (I pretty like Adapta nowadays as well). I know that theme is something what people can change easily but I really think that it does make a huge difference what the default one is.
I wanna try Mint-y now!
Well, unfortunately Mint-y GTK won’t work on current version of Linux Mint as it has an older GTK version. You may try it on other distros, though. The icon theme can be used any time from now (even on current Mint) but please note that this is not official yet, Mint team might make some changes in these themes.
